This seminar will update some SWA treatment modalities and new orthodontic products from recent years.
PART I:
The use of the Straight Wire Appliance (SWA) as a “fixed functional orthodontic appliance” in the treatment of mixed dentition and adolescent cases
- This lecture will enable the general dentist/orthodontist to recognize orthodontic malocclusions and myofunctional dysfunctions as they are developing in their younger patients.
- The dentist will learn how a "function" affects the “form” of the dental arches – that is the understanding of the effect of soft-tissue dysfunctions on the development of malocclusions and facial anomalies.
- Treating function and form at the same time using the SWA.
- The early treatment of severe myofunctional disorders is essential in order to avoid an abnormal facial growth pattern.
- Why orthodontic treatment results will not be stable without treatment of oro-facial dysfunctions.
- A simple analysis of the soft tissue dysfunctions (sucking habits, mouth breathing, dental interferences causing mandibular slide) will be presented and their specific characteristics will be analyzed.
- The dentist will be able to understand at which age to start treatment and what results he/she can expect using the straight-forward SWA treatment mechanics specified in the course.
- The dentist will learn how the simple system of Dr Brown using the SWA and its auxiliaries will enable him/her to quickly alter the growth pattern which exists so as to be able to obtain for his/her patients:
- An aesthetic harmony of the lips, jaws and teeth
- A treatment of most cases without extracting teeth by using “Growth Modification”
- A beautiful, pleasing smile and facial appearance
- an optimal CLI occlusion
Program Part 1:
Presentation of the treatment of several “clinical cases”, with different types of malocclusion, which are treated with the SWA and its auxiliaries:
1. Mid-mixed dentition (dental ages 9 to 10) – “Two Phase Treatment”
Severe malocclusion cases with functional problems requiring early intervention.
CLII dental and skeletal - with closed bite and with open bite.
CLIII dental and skeletal
2. Late mixed dentition and adolescent dentition (11 to 14 years old)
CLII dental and skeletal
CLIII dental and skeletal
The presentation of these patient cases will show the participating dentists how the system of Dr. Brown allows the treating dentist to consistently and systematically achieve great orthodontic as well as orthopedic results for any type of malocclusion situation.
PART II:
The use of the Straight Wire Appliance (SWA) for orthodontic Extraction therapy treatment
Program Part II:
Lecture:
- Extraction treatment. Explanation and discussion of space closure using sliding mechanics with CLI, CLII and CLIII forces. Instruction on the biomechanics of space closure and of anchorage.
- Clinical case presentation of CLI, CLII and CLIII extraction cases which examine different anchorage situations and which compare the use of intra-oral elastics, NiTi Closing springs and chain elastics.
- How to use the “Esthetic Diagnosis” of the face, space analysis and cephalometic analysis to determine the anchorage requirements of the case - moderate, maximum or minimum achorage.
The Therapeutic diagnosis.
- The use of Mini-screws for additional anchorage (boney anchorage).
The discussion and analysis of the above “clinical case presentations” will include the discussion of the of the following subjects
I. The Biomechanics and treatment mechanics using the Straight Wire Appliance (SWA)
a.Brackets and bands
- Bracketing and banding for success
- “Self ligating brackets” and “ligating brackets”.
- Anti microbial elastomeric ligature ties
- The 6 Keys to Optimal Occlusion as the treatment goal and for long term stability.
b. Archwires - the motor of the SWA
- Thermal (Heat) activated Nickel Titanium (HA NiTi) – for applying “optimal force levels” ;
- The rectangular steel wires - our working wire.
- The “Utility Archwire” – used as a “fixed functional appliance” for early Growth Modification in our early and mid-Mixed Dentition (MD) cases ;
- The “Reverse Curve of Spee” (RCS) NiTi wires – for efficient bite opening ;
- The 16x22 NiTi intrusion wire for incisor intrusion and bite opening
- The 19x25 NiTi wire with 20° additional torque in the incisor region
c. Auxiliaries of the SWA :
- NiTi open and closed coil springs, intra-oral elastics, chain elastics, headgear, Lock Stops, Kobi Hooks.
"The Heat Activated Nitanium (NiTi) Trans-palatal Expander” and the “Heat Activated Nitanium (NiTi) Trans-palatal Molar Rotator”. Combined with the SWA, they work as a “fixed functional appliance” for early Growth Modification in our early Mixed Dentition (MD) cases
These are easy to place, provide an optimal light and constant force, and do not need adjustment once they are in place.
- Bite-Guides – small appliances fixed to the incisors that are used for bite opening and to orthopedically advance the mandible for skeletal correction of CLII skeletal malocclusions in growing patients.
- The “Twin-force Bite corrector”- a fixed appliance, added to the SWA to correct difficult CLII skeletal/dental discrepancies.
d. Discussion of the different types of tooth movement:
- Tipping, translation, rotation, intrusion, extrusion
e. Intra-oral molar distalization technique using mini-screws in a distaliser system.
II. Discussion of the development of orthodontic problems
- The effect of soft tissue/muscular dysfunctions on the hard tissue
- Diagnosis and recognition of different growth patterns of the jaws
- Using an Esthetic Evaluation of the Face and Lips combined with orthodontic study models and the Cephalometric x-ray and Analysis to give us a pleasing esthetic treatment result along with an Optimal Occlusion.
- Recognizing Skeletal and/or Dental malocclusions
III. Diagnosis for different age groups in young patients
- What age is the “Optimal Moment” to start the treatment of these different malocclusion situations?
- Most young patients can be treated non-extraction if the timing of the treatment is at the right moment and not started too late.
- Maximizing and using natural growth for our treatment - Timing the adolescent growth spurt
- We work with nature in order to obtain a beautiful facial harmony of the lips, teeth and jaws combined with a super CLI occlusion for stable results.
- “Growth Modification”
IV. How to diagnose and properly treat cases with extractions
A detailed syllabus of the course material will be given out.
After the course you will understand that by using Dr Brown’s system of “Esthetic Orthodontics”, the treating dentist is able to obtain for each patient an improved appearance facially and an optimal occlusion.
With his system of treatment, you will be able to obtain for your patients:
- An optimal occlusion
- An aesthetic harmony of the lips, jaws and teeth
- Treat most young patients without extracting teeth by using “Growth Modification”
- A beautiful, pleasing smile and facial appearance
