The Advanced Seminars/Study Clubs of the “Orthodontic Seminars of California, Dr Larry Brown” are developed for experienced orthodontic practitioners, who understand the importance of continuing their orthodontic education.

It is important as one is finishing cases or is getting started with new cases, to be able to have advice on special problem or to be able to simply ask specific questions. Many practitioners simply need advice about the diagnosis and treatment planning of new cases. As these problems and questions arise, and are discussed in a “study club setting”, everyone can in the group can benefit and learn so as to build confidence in our treatment abilities.

During the season 2009- 2010, there will be 2 times 2 days (4 days total) over about 9 months.

There will be about 4 to 5 hours of lecture per day presented by Dr Brown on new, more advanced subjects. New cases with different clinical situations which haven’t seen before we be resented for analysis.

In the afternoon, there will bediscussion on the cases of the doctor participants. These will be projected for viewing on the screen and discussed as a group. This period of discussion will act as a review for the group. These can be new cases for diagnosis or cases already in progress where advice and commentary is needed {as a way of explaining the diagnosis and the mechanics of treatment of some of these case, similar clinical cases of Dr Brown can be shown to the group}.

To present a case for help, you should have good facial photos, photos of the models (or models that are properly trimmed so as to be in proper occlusion when placed on their back), and/or inter-oral photos of the teeth and arches from all 5 views, as well as a cephalometric x-ray and tracing.

We can discuss cases in the « round table format » individually but it is better if they are placed in a Power Point presentation format and then on a CD or “USB memory-stick” so that they can be easily projected for all to learn from.

For each patient clinical case that is presented by the doctors, there will be discussion (as they relate to each patient case) about: the basic theory on « Human Growth Patterns » and the “development of orthodontic problems; “The Esthetic diagnosis” of Dr Brown; “Study model” evaluation; the Cephalometirc x-ray and tracing analysis; the basics of the biomechanics involved in the treatment; the details of the actual mechanical treatment of the patient; the potential problems to watch outfor during the treatment; finishing the cases to obtain an optimal occlusion along with an esthetic harmony of the face, jaws and teeth; removing the appliance; making the proper retention.

You will receive a syllabus on the various lecture subjects discussed and of the clinical patient cases that are presented by Dr Brown. These are for your information and later review.

There will be 2 times 2 days for the season 2009:

The dates for the year 2009: Final Dates to be announced

Location: Gdansk and Warsawa, Poland

Hours : 9am to 5:00 pm.

The subjects of the lectures

Session 1. Organized by the Orthodontic Study Club of Gdansk: Gdansk, June 1 & 2, 2009:

DAY 1:

A. Comprehensive Adult Treatment --- non-extraction and extraction.

  1. Non-extraction treatment -- the strange cases which maybe difficult to “visualize a good result”.

-Trouble shooting – the cases with underlying skeletal situations that can get you in trouble.

  1. Tooth Slenderizing/slicing which can be used instead of extractions in borderline “extraction/non-extraction” situations. Or for camouflage treatment for mild CLIII and CLII adolescent and adult cases.

  2. Extraction therapy using sliding mechanics – which teeth to extract; maintaining anchorage in all types of different anchorage situations; realizing an acceptable “compromised result” for those difficult skeletal problem cases with crowding.

DAY 2:

A. Finish from DAY 1.

B. Molar distalisation combined with the SWA using removable extra-oral Headgear (HG), the HA NiTi expander, the sliding yoke, “molar distalizers” using O-C spring and laboratory made “modified Nance molar distalizing fixed appliances” and the removable intra-oral « ACCO » appliance. Some of these techniques are combined when used.

2. DATES and LOCATION TO BE ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2ND SESSION:

DAY 1:

A.Orthodontic Treatment Combined with Oral Surgery - Surgical treatment is for those orthodontic problems that are so severe that neither GM nor camouflage offers a solution to align the jaws or the dento-alveolar segments. Both jaws can be repositioned, the chin can be moved in all 3 planes of space, the dentoalveolar segments can be surgically repositioned.

These are combined with orthodontics to treat severe dentofacial problems of any type.

The handling of surgical orthodontic cases (these cases are treated differently than routine orthodontic cases - What may be a simple GM treatment in a child, becomes a surgical case in adults.

1. The diagnosis and treatment planning; 2. pre-surgical orthodontic treatment; 3. the surgical procedure; 4. the post-surgical orthodontic treatment and finishing.

DAY 2:

A. Finishing phases of treatment using intra-oral elastics, re-bracketing and wire bending: Finishing and detailing to achieve the “6 Keys of Optimal Occlusion”; removing the appliance; proper retention.

B. The Orthodontic Mini-implants (mini-screws) used for anchorage.

C. Review of treatment mechanics and workshops as requested by the doctors
